I registered with my local emergency management agency today for RACES today. (No, it has nothing to do with racing, or anything like that - see the link)

Basically now should there be a natural disaster, or say should there be an invasion on our soil that takes out critical communications infrastructure, like the phone systems, I go out and assist groups like hospitals, 911 dispatch, police, fire, etc in communicating with my ham radio equipment, license, and know how. It's a way I can help my country and fellow citizens when they need it most without donning camouflage and shooting enemy soldiers until I get shot myself. Plus I intend to train for skywarn so I can become a storm spotter, and help my community (when you're part of skywarn, it is my understanding you have a method of direct communications with the county EOC - and if you say tornado they activate the sirens and everyone runs for cover :-) )
Of course, I had to pass a FEMA Certification course in emergency preparedness training and have a valid Amateur radio license.
